Welcome To IYA

In the year 2009, the world celebrated the International Year of Astronomy as it commemorated the 400th anniversary of Galileo's use of a telescope to study the skies, and Kepler's publication of Astronomia Nova. 2009 was also the anniversary of many other historic events in science, including Huygen's 1659 publication of Systema Saturnium. This is modern astronomy's quadricentennial, and the 2009 Year of Astronomy is be an international celebration of numerous astronomical and scientific milestones. Events are still being planned, and you are invited to tell us how you want to celebrate. This page is a product of the U.S. 2009 IYA team, and we want to help you make 2009 a year long celebration to remember.

Spread the word: the Universe is yours to discover. Celebrate IYA 2009.

Many International Year of Astronomy Programs Continuing

iya_logo_beyondThe International Year of Astronomy 2009 is closing with a full moon, a "Blue Moon" that seems a fitting conclusion to such an event-filled year.

We would like to thank everyone for the many hours of dedicated volunteer time that went into making IYA2009 such a huge success! Although IYA2009 is coming to an end, many programs and events will be continuing. Please download a listing of the Continuing Programs as well as a Calendar of Astronomy Events that are coming up in 2010 and beyond.

Howdy!

Our student video podcast is swinging into full gear! Our first videos will focus on our solar system, and the scripts are being written this month. However, we need your help!

  • Are you a student? Do you have a video camera and video editing software? Then contribute a podcast! We can provide scripts and we have some volunteers to help find photos to use. Each video should be 5-10 minutes long. For more details and to volunteer, e-mail Keri Bean at outreach@seds.org
  • Are you an educator (any grade level or university level) or space nerd with a bit of free time? We need volunteers to edit scripts and double check for accuracy. If you’re interested, please send an e-mail with your name, title, and areas of research/interest to Keri Bean at outreach@seds.org

Another podcast we’re contributing to is the 365 Days of Astronomy! Are you a student with a neat job, sweet co-op, or a fun research project that’s space-related? Share your experience with the world! Sign up for a day at http://365daysofastronomy.org/

April 2-5 is the 100 Hours of Astronomy event (http://100hoursofastronomy.org/). April 12 also celebrates the the day when Yuri Gagarin made the first spaceflight (and the first space shuttle launch!), and parties are held across the globe during Yuri’s Night (http://yurisnight.net/). Since April 12 falls on Easter this year, most will be celebrating early. We’re coordinating student parties to celebrate both Yuri’s Night and the 100 Hours of Astronomy event! If you’re interested in getting tips on running a joint celebration, contact Keri Bean at outreach@seds.org.

Welcome!

The Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS, www.seds.org) is proud to partner with the International Year of Astronomy to coordinate student events!

We currently plan to

  • contribute to the 365 Days of Astronomy podcast, highlighting student opportunities in astronomy, planetary science, and other related fields
  • host star parties as part of the 100 Hours of Astronomy event
  • host space-themed parties, celebrating events like space shuttle launches
  • publish a biweekly video podcast starting no later than March 1st on space-related subjects, filmed, edited, and written by college students to educate K-12 students

If you have suggestions or would like to help coordinate or contribute, please e-mail Keri Bean at outreach@seds.org.
