Welcome To IYA

In the year 2009, the world celebrated the International Year of Astronomy as it commemorated the 400th anniversary of Galileo's use of a telescope to study the skies, and Kepler's publication of Astronomia Nova. 2009 was also the anniversary of many other historic events in science, including Huygen's 1659 publication of Systema Saturnium. This is modern astronomy's quadricentennial, and the 2009 Year of Astronomy is be an international celebration of numerous astronomical and scientific milestones. Events are still being planned, and you are invited to tell us how you want to celebrate. This page is a product of the U.S. 2009 IYA team, and we want to help you make 2009 a year long celebration to remember.

Spread the word: the Universe is yours to discover. Celebrate IYA 2009.

Many International Year of Astronomy Programs Continuing

iya_logo_beyondThe International Year of Astronomy 2009 is closing with a full moon, a "Blue Moon" that seems a fitting conclusion to such an event-filled year.

We would like to thank everyone for the many hours of dedicated volunteer time that went into making IYA2009 such a huge success! Although IYA2009 is coming to an end, many programs and events will be continuing. Please download a listing of the Continuing Programs as well as a Calendar of Astronomy Events that are coming up in 2010 and beyond.

The 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast is an International Year of Astronomy 2009 project that will publish 1 podcast per day for all 365 days of 2009. The podcast episodes will be written, recorded and produced by people around the world.

Communicating the story of astronomy through a multitude of voices
Astronomy is a global endeavor with people of all ages and nations participating in amateur and professional astronomy. This podcast will showcase the diversity of voices – your voices – discussing topics ranging from historical moments to today’s discoveries, and from astronomy in literature to astronomy in the backyard. All accents are invited to contribute to this English language podcasts.

We are looking for individuals, schools, companies and clubs to submit 5 – 10 minutes of audio for our daily podcast.

Participants can do as few as 1 episode or up to 12 episodes (one per month, subject to our editorial discretion). Our goal is to encourage people to sign up for a particular day (or days) of 2009. We have a calendar of astronomical events to give ideas but the podcasts can be about virtually any astronomical topic. We are seeking a wide range of contributions, from simple concepts to more in-depth discussions of complex concepts. We are expecting a wide range of contributions, from simple at-home first-time podcasts to highly-polished and professional recordings. We hope to sign up a wide range of participants, from school children to graduate students in astronomy to science bloggers and podcasters to big media companies and even big media stars.

We are also looking for organizations to support us financially

We are inviting organizations to sponsor the podcast by donating $25 to support 1 day of the podcast. As examples, your organization could sponsor 1 episode per month ($300), 1 episode per week ($1300), or every episode for 1 week ($175). These donations will help pay for editing and posting of the podcasts. Sponsors will be mentioned in the audio and on the web site on the days they sponsor.
