“Starry Messengers”
Puerto Rico, July 7, 2008: The “Starry Messengers” present a preliminary activity for the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) at the Arecibo Observatory Ángel Ramos Visitor Center: “Galileo’s Route”.
This Sunday July 13, 2008 beginnning at 9:00 a.m. at the Ángel Ramos Visitor Center of the Arecibo Observatory visitors will be able to enjoy a prelude to the IYA2009. At this unique event, the “Starry Messengers” will present exhibits about telescopes, the night sky, the Sun and the Moon. As visitors tour the largest radio telescope in the world they will be able to follow a route that explores Galileo Galilei’s most important astronomical discoveries and the effort involved in changing the philosophical ideas of his time.
The “Starry Messengers” are a group of college students from Puerto Rico that will be working as volunteers during the IYA2009 events.
This activity is the culmination of a 4 day workshop that had as an objective to establish a working team of undergraduate students (“Starry Messengers”) and engage them in the activities of the IYA2009. The students will be presenting adapted materials in astronomy to include the blind and visually impaired public.
